Richard Grayson
Candidate for U.S. House of Representatives - District 5
Arizona · Congressional District 5
Statement
The gravest challenges facing the United States today stem from the authoritarian, increasingly fascistic tendencies that have emerged in the wake of Trump-era policies. These tendencies manifest not just in rhetoric but in a deliberate undermining of institutions that have historically safeguarded democratic norms. The arts, science, education—pillars of a reflective and informed society—have been demeaned or defunded. Expertise is dismissed as elitism; facts are cast aside in favor of conspiracy and spectacle. What grows in that vacuum is rule by impulse, not principle. Policies that once upheld environmental stewardship, civil rights, and legal accountability have been dismantled or hollowed out. Minority communities, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and others who rely on the protections of law now face hostility not just from fringe groups but from the machinery of the state itself. In this climate, governance slips into chaos, masked by a performance of strength. Oligarchic power thrives—less through wealth alone than through the manipulation of fear, grievance, and media distraction. The rule of law, once a guardrail, becomes selectively enforced, if not openly mocked. These aren't growing pains; they're warning signs. The danger lies not only in what is done, but in how quickly a nation learns to accept it.
