Statement
I am Navajo of the Tangle People Clan, born for the Red House clan, maternal grandfathers are of the Deer Water clan, and paternal grandfathers are of the Cliff Dweller clan. I was born north of the sacred mountain of the west, Doo'ko'osliid (the San Francisco Peaks). Funding public education, providing for our youth and elders, and protecting the environment will be key tenants of my service at the legislature. Tribal sovereignty must be respected and being LD 6 this district represents 10 tribes in Arizona, it's vital that we elect a representative who can work with these tribes and advance their interests at the state legislature. We are the largest, most rural district in the state and we deserve representation that will travel to meet people where they are at. I am committed to serving the people of Arizona.
Biography
Jamescita Peshlakai is a Navajo combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War who previously served one term in the Arizona House and two terms in the Arizona Senate representing this district. In 2021 she sponsored SB1802, which made August 14 Arizona Navajo Code Talkers Day. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Northern Arizona University and is a student at ASU's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law. She served as tribal liaison for the U.S. Department of the Interior under the Biden administration, and in 2025 Gov. Katie Hobbs appointed her to the Arizona State Transportation Board. She is running on a joint slate with Rep. Mae Peshlakai; their platform calls for repealing universal ESA vouchers, Medicare for All, renewable energy, and respect for tribal sovereignty. She won the July 21, 2026 Democratic primary with about 56% of the vote and faces Republican nominee Lloyd Johnson in the November 3, 2026 general election.
