He authored and passed the most comprehensive school safety legislation in decades, led the effort to enact Preston's Law to crack down on teen mob violence, and secured funding to support law enforcement families and strengthen recruitment. He has worked to increase teacher pay, lower the cost of living, and keep Arizona free, competitive, and open for opportunity. Matt's story is rooted in hard work. Raised by a single mom in a small town in Oklahoma, he worked his way through college by driving school buses and became the first in his family to earn a degree. He later taught high school and served on a local school board, fighting to keep schools open during COVID-19 and expand educational freedom. Before the Legislature, Matt served as Arizona's budget director, helping deliver the largest tax cut in state history. Biography
Matt Gress, representing Arizona's District 4, chairs the House Education Committee and serves as Vice-Chair of Appropriations. Raised by a single mom, Matt worked his way through college driving school buses and became the first in his family to earn a degree. A former high school teacher in a low-income area, he served on the Madison School Board, fighting for open schools during COVID-19 and parental choice. Before the House, he was Arizona's budget director and helped author the largest tax cut in Arizona history. At the Capitol, Matt has advanced school safety and supported law enforcement families.
