Biography
John Giles is an attorney who was born and raised in Mesa, attended Mesa public schools and Brigham Young University, served on the Mesa City Council from 1996 to 2000, and was Mesa's mayor from 2014 to 2025. A registered Republican for decades, he helped lead a coalition of Republicans and independents supporting Katie Hobbs in 2022, spoke at her inauguration, and served on Hobbs administration commissions focused on transportation and early childhood education. He changed his voter registration to independent in May 2026. On August 11, 2026, Hobbs named Giles as her lieutenant governor running mate, framing it as a bipartisan ticket. The Hobbs campaign said Giles would not participate in debates, and he did not attend the Oct. 5, 2026 Clean Elections lieutenant governor debate. The Hobbs-Giles ticket is on the November 3, 2026 general-election ballot.
