Lieutenant Governor
Created by voter-approved Proposition 131 in 2022, Lieutenant Governor is a brand-new Arizona office first appearing on the 2026 ballot. Rather than a separate primary, each Governor nominee named a running mate after the July 21, 2026 primary, and the two run together as a single ticket in the November 3, 2026 general election. The Lieutenant Governor succeeds the Governor in case of death, resignation, removal, or incapacity, and otherwise serves in whatever role the Governor assigns (chief of staff, an agency director, etc.). The office carries a four-year term.
What does this office actually control?
A brand-new office, first elected in 2026: the Governor’s second-in-command, running on a joint ticket with the Governor.
- Becomes Governor if the Governor dies, resigns, is removed, or can’t serve — replacing the Secretary of State as next in line.
- Takes on whatever role the Governor assigns — often a cabinet post like chief of staff or an agency director.
- Has no independent lawmaking, budget, or veto power of their own; authority flows from the Governor.
What this office does NOT control
The Lieutenant Governor doesn’t run for office alone — voters elect the Governor and Lieutenant Governor together as a single ticket.
